My husband and I may be moving to NC and the cary area in a few months. I have a step son who has ADHD but the private school that he is currently at has scholarships to help pay for the tuition ( the john mckay scholarship) . Are there any such programs in this area? I am so fearful of not being able to give him a good education if we move or find a school that he would fit into.
Are you in Florida? I googled the scholarship you mentioned and it seemed to be a state of FL scholarship. I don't know that there isn't something similar offered in NC, but generally I will say that Florida is more generous with many aspects of their public education budget than NC is (e.g., paying for preschool for all 4 year olds, 18 student per class max, etc.). That being said, many private schools over scholarships based on financial need.
Yes, we are in florida. That is frusterating because we have to more due to a job relocation however the school probablem is making me fearful. Do you have suggestions on private schools around that area? I have checked out Fletcher... also how is the public school system there?
Hopewell Academy in Cary, NC, accepts a wide variety of students including those with ADHD. They have an excellent academic program that is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. They have arts and sports as well for all grade levels. I would definitely check them out. Welcome to Hopewell Academy
Thanks for the info 4alark. I have looked into them as well and they look great! However, the annual fee is a bid steep. How are the public schools? i hate to go that route however because NC doesn't have a lot of scholarships it may be our only option. 9K - 12k is a lot for us right now.
We have 2 children with ADHD. I do not reccomend Wake County Public schools for any learning differences--unless the child attends a magnet school. The funding is much better and they seem to be able to serve the children.
Highschools in Wake County are a semester long instead of a year long. They have 4 classes a semester with 1 1/2 hour classes. It is torture for a child with attention problems. In addition, since working memory is generally a challenge for children w ADHD, the classes are condensed to fit a years worth of info into a semester. VERY tough for any child.
There are many schools in the area that support kids w ADHD: charter schools, private schools .

Good luck!
Have you tried removing artificial dye from your child's diet? My nephew was diagnosed and as soon as it was removed his symptoms improved immediately. There are many studies showing dyes cause issues. Many countries requiring products to be labeled that contain them.
As a parent (with ADHD) with 2 kids with ADHD in the Wake County school system, I completely disagree with the anti-wake post. My children have thrived in school. They both have IEP's with modifications for the classroom and homework. So there are people having great outcomes. As an FYI- my kids attended a charter school in NY and it was a horrible experience. My kids were behind when we moved here. Just saying that the good experiences out there.
