Does anyone know a place (besides Lowe's, etc) to buy my Christmas Tree around Holly Springs? I want a Fraser Fir. Even though I know they don't grow here I've heard that there are some Christmas Tree farms around that sell them.
I saw Frasier firs at Food Lion for $29 yesterday. A great price. Not sure if there are any local Christmas Tree Farms that sell them. We used to cut our own in MA.
Fraser firs are great. They don't seem to drop their needles so even if you bought it now it should still have all of its needles by Christmas.
I was about to say Food Lion too. I stopped by the one in Cary yesterday to pick something up and was quite suprised to see that had some VERY nice looking frasier firs out for really good prices!!
A lot of our trees come from tree farmers in the NC mountains. Not sure about the ones at the grocery stores, but $29 is an incredible buy on a fresh tree like that.
I have such mixed feelings about cut trees, and wrestle with this every year. Part of me feels awful at the thought of cutting down a tree, yet another part feels like I am supporting a NC farmer trying to feed his own family. Some years I get the cut tree, and others, I put up my fairly believable artificial one, and then put real, fresh garland all over the house.
Something about a fake tree makes me feel like I'm celebrating a fake Christmas.

If you were cutting down a 'wild' tree....then yes, it would be a bad thing. But these trees are planted and tended to, just like any other crop. When they are cut for one year....the tree farms plant a new one.

Tree farming is very sustainable.
Agreed, the cut christmas trees you see for sale were grown for that very purpose. Much like the corn we eat. I use to struggle with this concept as well until I realized how it is just another type of "farming".
BTW, I discovereed an interesting fact on NPR this morning. North Carolina is the 2nd largest Christmas tree producer in the U.S. second only to Oregon!
Thanks for the support, ie. wrestling with the tree. I tell myself it is tree farming, and sustainable. I guess if I were to feel guilty, it would make more sense to feel bad about lighting up the neighborhood and over-eating when some have so little.
Speaking of trees, do any of you do 'themed' trees?
Mine has always been a hodge-podge of all of our ornaments, from over the years, but I have seen some neat trees done either on a color-theme, or a theme centered around, say, the beach or 'hunting' or 'children's stories.' The closest I come to a themed-tree is the little one I set out in the kitchen, with gingerbread men on it, and little cooking utensils and tools. My sister-in-law does a beautiful Nature tree, with woods animals and pine cones, garland-ed in cranberries and popcorn.

Yes, we do 'themed' trees....but mostly it's just a color scheme more then 'theme; (Right now, dark teal blue, white and silver.)
The fake lighted palm tree does have a 'theme'....lots of Ocean/Beach/Nautical ornaments....including Santa in a bathing suit. That isn't our main tree though.
Lowe's in Chapel Hill actually had nice Frasier Furs from the Asheville area for good price.
