It's a cold 32 degrees here - in MA - this AM - and I see that it is also - 32 degrees - in Cary.
Is this usual Fall/Winter weather in the Triangle?
Looking at weather.com, the Triangle looks warmer than where we are in Winter, but those are just averages.
One of the main reasons we are looking to move is the cold weather up here, so trying to get a feel for cold there. I know it does not snow as much (at all?).
You'll notice a difference. It does get cold here, so if you can't stand the idea of any cold (or snow, because it does snow on occasion) this isn't the place for you. Personally I like still having the change of seasons, but I also like the higher angle of the sun in winter and the fact that even on December 21, it stays light out till 5:00. And yes, it's true, you'll turn into one of those people that moves south and needs a coat and mittens when it's 50 degrees, LOL.
This weather seems extremely unusual for this time of year. I think we are in for a cold one this year.
Several years ago near the end of December, my brother in NW PA emailed me with, "We are two degrees warmer than you are."
Kind of "Neener, Neener."
I emailed back, "Talk to me in 6 weeks when my daffodils are in bloom."
Him: "Uh, yeah...."
We get into a trough now and then and approximate a northern temperature for a day or two, but generally, there is little comparable winter weather here.
We will be 70 this weekend.
We definitely have cold days and nights here. I think the difference here is that our cold season is much shorter and even when it gets quite cold at night, it often warms up by mid day. It's also very sunny here. I moved from Chicago and for me it was a very positive change in weather. It also hardly snows here, although when it does everything closes!
The biggest difference to me and my wife is that it's almost always sunny here in the winter with a nice blue sky. Up north it was gray from the end of Oct to March.

Yep - The first time you scrape frost off your car windows in the AM and then realize that afternoon you're outside in a short sleeve shirt you'll understand the difference.
Analyzing weather based on any single point in time is pretty fruitless.
Yeah, it will be spring in February here. I'm still trying to get used to that, although I love it! And I agree about the blue skies - up north a clear blue sky in the winter means it's frigid outside - not so here.

Um, well, the "usual" weather would in fact be our averages.
Much of the country is experiencing a cold snap. We're not immune to that.
