Maybe you could consider retail at a small local shop. Might not have the issues that you have now.

Which part of the Triangle do you live in? For a part-time job, you probably don't want to drive pillar-to-post across the region. It would narrow where people might suggest.

I live in the north Raleigh area, and you are correct, it's not worth it to drive to Apex, Durham, etc for a low paying part time job.

A long time ago, I used to teach ESL part-time at Berlitz Language School, off Six Forks just north of Lynn Rd. It would certainly help if you had teaching experience or an English or Linguistics degree, etc, but really the main thing they require is native speakers, good communication skills, and a friendly personality. They will train you on their method. It was a couple of decades ago that I taught there, but most of the students were well-educated professionals at International RTP companies, who were temporarily relocated here, just boning up on their English. It's usually one-on-one rather than classroom. I actually am still in touch with two of my ex-students (now back in Japan) after over 25 years!

Any chance you can get a job at your kids' school? There are usually a variety of positions.
