Those are the only two birds I'd discourage from nesting on my property so that other birds could nest there instead.
Starlings especially. Since you knew about those birds, you probably know about how Starlings were introduced to the US?
I believe Starlings were brought over from Europe and released in Central Park in the 1800's...same for House Sparrows. What a dumb ideal
I discourage Starlings and Sparrows from nesting in my yard too. They'll never nest in my Bluebird or Martin housing, and I go the great lengths to prevent it

I suppose back then, they didn't think about repercussions. Heck, a lot of people now don't either. I knew a guy who ran a vineyard and he said Starlings were his #1 problem. He needed to use loud air cannons to scare them away, which used to **** off the neighbors pretty bad!
As a follow-up, gas at the same place is the same price this much time later, and it is higher than it has been. Is this the new standard? No holidays or pipeline incidents so not sure what caused the increase.

I filled up there last weekend and it was something like $2.29 for Regular, IIRC. Today it was $2.43. That's a huge leap from just a few days ago. Their website says Premium is $2.89.
We got up early to have breakfast at the Flying Biscuit. I flipped on my windshield wipers to get rid of the mist and it wasn't mist, it was ice.
It really didn't feel as cold as the temp was though, mid 30s, I suppose because of the humidity. Anyway, the sun is out and we're getting better temps later this week.

Last night got really cold. I was up at one point and saw snow in North Raleigh.
I tend to ignore overnight temps because I just sleep through them, and don't have any plants outside right now. It's rare that I'm outside as early as I was this morning though, so it surprised me.
Also vacuumed the porch, not much pollen left. That leaf blower did a pretty good job. Hopefully there's not much left out there.

To reply to my reply on this, heard on the news that gas prices are the highest since 2015. Heard it on CNN in passing but didn't get the context, WSJ has an article but am not a subscriber so...
Interesting that just as the US is attempting to increase production and thus use up its resources, other countries are getting smarter about preserving theirs. The article title: "Americans Face Highest Pump Prices in Years Continuing production cuts by major exporters have sent gas prices higher"
