We are buying a used home (06 built). The seller says he only has one key which was weird.

In any case, I have to get the exterior door locks (3 of them) re-keyed rather than change locks. Any recommendations and what it would cost?

Thx

I've had Schlage locks rekeyed at Lowe's, done while-you-wait, $5 each. That was several years ago; the price may have increased since then.

Apex Lock and Key

I cannot recall how much they charged, but they offer a warranty and they come to you.

We had a few sets of Emtek hardware rekeyed by them. Excellent service.

We used someone on ligon mills in WF. Price seemed reasonable, but I don't recall specifics. I don't believe that you can take locks in anymore to be changed, but I'm not sure.

So I have to take the lock out and take it along right?

Yes.

There are alternatives.
1) Some locksmiths will come to your house, for a fee.
2) Buy new door hardware and install it yourself.

We used them too. We liked that they came out on quick notice (a couple other places were scheduling a week out!). I don't remember the cost either, but it was reasonable.

To be more specific, the Apex company mentioned above CAME TO OUR HOUSE so we didn't have to do anything ourselves.

I would rekey the doors. I can't remember the cost in doing so, as it has been a long time, but I would spend the money to do so. It would just help me sleep better at night, if nothing else.

I called recently to a few different companies and the prices were 110-130 approx for 5 locks. They would provide multiple keys. One company in Apex (don't remember the name was running special where you got 5 keys with a whole house re-key.
