Another condo would be great, but it would need to be a 1-story place......... hopefully we can find a good place for her price range (100-125k).
It's too bad that most things in that price range in Knightdale or Wendell are single family houses, where your mother would need help with the yardwork and house maintenance.
Perhaps in a few years, there will be a condominium development nearby.

Agreed. My husband hates doing our yardwork, so I imagine he wouldn't thrilled about doing hers. It seems like with our aging population, this could be a great opportunity for builders to do well.

I agree with Poppydog. My MIL is much older than your mother (85) but we just went through the steps of looking for a place for her to live. When she was 70 she moved to a development of one-level townhomes. She lives in Greensboro, so that won't help you, but her townhome was very reasonably priced at about $100K. It was perfect for her and served her well for 15 years - 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a small fenced yard. She was able to live on her own independently, so it was perfect. Her neighbors were a mix of older folks and younger singles or roommates as well as some couples.
She recently had a stroke and cannot drive anymore, so we looked at the next step that Poppydog was talking about. We found a very nice independent living facility for her that also has assisted living should she need it down the road. Costs do get much more expensive at that step. Rent in the independent living is about $2400 for her for a small one bedroom, but they have all kinds of activities, meals, and a shuttle that takes the residents places. We're glad she was able to live independently for a long time, because this wouldn't have been affordable for her if she needed it when she was younger.
Anyway, my suggestion is to try to look for smaller one-level townhomes in your area. They might be small developments or resales, so you may have to do a lot of research or talk to a Realtor. Something like that would likely work best at this stage in her life. She shouldn't need the independent living type place until much further down the road, Gd willing.
