It looks like all post offices in RTP are using a central system for setting up appointments. I have called the number a few times and never heard back.
Anybody knows if any post office allows you to come in and get an appointment? I just came back from the one on TW Alexander Dr which would not do that.
We got ours a couple of years ago at the PO on Westgate Road in Raleigh, near the airport. We didn't have an appointment but that may have changed over the years. You could try to call the individual post office to find out?
Did this two months ago. Call, leave a message and make sure it's a number where you're reachable because otherwise you just have to call the same number again (and again) and repeat the process. And I used the Westgate location.
Try Wendell, and try Angier. You still need an appointment, though they're not typically booked out anywhere near like Raleigh's.
I think they are the next 2 closest that issue passports. I used the Angier PO summer 2012 for quick passports for my two young daughters and they were as nice as can be.

Reason: additional info
I second trying a Post Office out of town to get it done -- we did that when we had to get both kids done because I couldn't get an appointment in wake county for a looonnnggg time AND both parents had to be present or there was more paperwork/notary etc involved IIRC.
I would try just outside of wake/durham county -- perhaps a P.O. in Franklin county? Or Johnston or south more? You don't really have to travel far to make it less of a wait.
We actually stopped by a post office while we were on a long weekend in the mountains - kids had the monday off, but the P.O. was open so we did it in western carolina. They had no problem with it - were actually kind of excited because they hadn't processed a passport application in awhile.
Note: I made sure I had their passport pictures, all proper paperwork with me, cash for the fees and had called ahead of time to make sure appointments weren't necessary and that they knew how to process it. It went smoothly.
I never made an appointment to have mine done about 5 years back. I just showed up at the Cameron Village PO, waited in line, and done. Process has probably changed since then though.
Cameron Village is appointment only. I heard that the best bet is to go to Angier.
