What a hot forum this is. I've enjoyed reading what all of you have to say. The area sounds very enticing. My husband and I will be visiting soon to scope out the area for a possible relocation down the line. (We are in Phoenix now and just starting a family -- kids in the heat of these summers, I don't think so. At least in NC you have trees which provide shade.) I was wondering if there are any local events happening in January. We are interested in almost everything from concerts to museums. Anything happen on an annual basis around this time? We're looking to get a flavor of the area so to speak. Thanks in advance for your help.

North Carolina Museum of Art - Outreach Exhibitions (http://www.ncartmuseum.org/exhibitions/current.shtml - broken link)
I'm taking Sweetie to see the Impressionists.

Carolina Hurricanes - Schedule (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app?service=page&page=TeamSchedule - broken link)
The Canes have 7 January home games, and there are always tix on craigslist.

You will be required to eat a plate of fine Eastern North Carolina pulled pork barbecue at Clyde Cooper's, since 1938.

Eat some bad food (in moderation) at the top of the Clarion, iconic cylindrical/former Holiday Inn on Hillsborough Street and look down on much of the center of Raleigh.

I can take you for the pawnshop tour, if you want to honor your honey with someone else's jewelry...

There's other stuff...
I'll yield the floor and let someone else elaborate some, for awhile.

Unfortunately there isn't much going here that time of year. There is so much going on up until the holidays and then it all kind of dies out in Janurary for a few months. Plus it's cold here that time of year, so ther earen't a lot of festivals going on. I'd keep an eye out on Ticketmaster to see if there are any good shows or anything coming. Our Broadway Series South is pretty good if you like Broadway style shows. The art museum usually has some type of exhibit going on all the time.
I'd probably spend time just driving around, walking the various downtowns, visiting local restaraunts and shops, maybe hit the Art museum and the downtown Raleigh History and Natural Science Museums. If you're into art, there are some nice local art galleries in the triangle. Charlie Goodnight's Comedy Club is really fun. They get national acts there frequently and a headliner every weekend.
