It's obviously a very long-term project. In some ways it's already started - the developer has been acquiring land. As to when any significant construction might begin, that's a guess at this point.
Well, as it turns out they actually have more than one person working there. Our Team I'm guessing the other people would like to continue to have jobs and will see it through to completion.
In speaking with an individual who worked with the developer on this approval process, I found a couple of his comments interesting:
1. He described this area as one of the few remaining desirable frontiers of growth for the Triangle. Previously, westward growth stopped at Jordan lake. His term for this area of growth was "jumping the lake." With the expanded 64 having been completed a decade ago, and NC540 now complete to that point, he claimed (optimistically, in my view) that the commute toward RTP and the airport would only be about 20 minutes.
2. He thinks this effectively kills UNC's Carolina North project, saying the University had no money to develop that campus, and would have to rely on private investment and development driven by the health care system - all of which will now go toward this new development. As noted above, one of the first projects for this new development is a UNC health care system center.
I don't think it will affect Carolina North greatly. That will probably still happen sooner or later. The wheels are already in motion and I think it will eventually pick up steam.
Technically Chapel Hill is west of Jordan Lake. There has definitely been development (housing) over in Chatham (Briar Chapel, etc), but nothing of this scale.
I was talking to someone who said Jim Goodnight had been buying up real estate in the area for years and he thought it was his retirement hedge against tech. I don't know about that, but there you go.
