Hello everyone! My partner and I are in the process of deciding where to move. We currently live in Charlotte and want to make a change. I went to NCSU, and lived in Raleigh for several years. I love Raleigh!! Now at a different point in my life, my partner and I are deciding between Raleigh and Asheville. Just to make it harder, the reasons for selecting each are totally different. I love the Raleigh vibe but prefer the scenery of the mountains. Anyhow, I'm not starting a Raleigh vs Asheville thread because the ultimate decider will be the jobs!!! (yes I know which has more jobs) So back on track. I can no longer be a city dweller, while I love it, we have chickens, dogs (our own and fosters), an antique car collection, etc. So I'm thinking to get enough room, no HOA, and our price range, we will be outside the Raleigh city limits. What areas within reasonable distance of Raleigh are the most eclectic/diverse/accepting of differences?? I have friends in Clayton, Garner, and oxford. No one has any problems but I want more opinions. Thank's Ya'll
I'd steer more toward Chatham Co and Apex area except they're planning to build a massive development (work/play/live) there. I think that area would give you easy access to Raleigh, but also to Durham and Chapel Hill. Living in Garner or Clayton is a long way from Durham or Chapel Hill.
I would suggest starting in Apex and driving down Old US 1 through New Hill, into Chatham County, and taking a couple of side roads here and there. Lovely area, and plenty of elbow room.
And US 1 obviously delivers you to Raleigh easily enough.
You can find "Fancy" there.
You can also find "Bucolic" and "Down to Earth."
