This is a great area for dogs. I just took mine to the Raleigh flea market again, and then we went down the street to the art museum grounds. Perfect day for both.

Where are your favorite places to walk dogs?

I also like taking mine to downtown Raleigh and other downtown areas, but favor Raleigh for this (my dog is very much an extrovert). Occoneechee, Eno River, and Umstead are our favorite hiking spots.

We took our little mutt dog to Lynn Lake park. He loved it.

My dog used to love walking downtown and then sitting on the porch at Flying Saucer. Other than that, we loved the greenways along the Neuse River from Wake Forest.

We enjoy taking our dogs to Duke Forest (off Whitfield Road between NC-86 and Erwin Road).

I'm going to try them all!

A follow-up - where are we least likely to encounter off leash dogs? An incident deep into Eno River State Park has left me hesitant to do any good hiking. We were lucky that of the two dogs we saw, the owners grabbed the aggressive one, and it was only the puppy that ran toward us and jumped all over my dog. A little harrowing.

My guess is that you're least likely to encounter an off-leash dog in a busy urban area rather than in a secluded forest or state park.

I like the Bolin Creek Greenway and Battle Branch Trail in Chapel Hill. Specifically, park off of Martin Luther King Dr. to start on the Bolin (wide, greenway-style paths), connect to Battle Branch (narrow, single-track trails) and go through the woods, then pop out into downtown Chapel Hill and follow the sidewalks back up to my car. It's a big loop that lets the dog have a nice walk on the greenways, explore/sniff the wooded areas, and also get to go about town & see other people & dogs in town. My dog needs a lot of mental & physical exercise and she always seems to be more worn out and happy when she gets both urban and forested elements on the same walk.

Here's a map:
