1997 (US), 2000 Cary/Morrisville. I was looking to move out of the DC suburbs. I did my research and decided Austin, TX or Cary, NC would be the best fit for me. I met a guy who'd moved to Montgomery Village, MD from Cary and he couldn't stop singing Cary's praises. It just so happened that I got a job in the RTP first (turned down one in Somers, NY before that).
What other places (besides the aforementioned) have you lived?
India; Poughkeepsie, NY; Montgomery Village, MD; Herdon, VA.
What do you like about the area?
As a bit of a Civil War buff, I was fascinated by the dichotomous role played by NC in the Civil War. I'm as moderate as they come and NC reflects my personality the best. The people, weather, and traffic are also reasons why I wouldn't dream of living anywhere else. Also, my kids were born here and as an immigrant, somehow it appeals to me that my kids have a town and state to truly call home.
Finally, tell us a little some thing about yourself in general.
Jack of all trades, Master of none. Music, books, cooking, gardening, electronics, and philosophy are my passions. I wish I could live life through the eyes of every single type of human being on earth. Mankind is fascinating. Oh, unfortunately, I believe we're singular specimens of sentient life. That's a huge bummer for a sci-fi fanatic :-p
Manny Wald, thanks for the update, Raleigh is first if we like we stay, although I am gunning more for W.S or Greensboro as they are smaller, but here you have bigger options for jobs.
I know what you talk about assimilation, but I grew up with it, I was always a foreigner here, and I know how to deal with it. Sure they are always people who will tell you to go back where you come from, but you ignore them and continue to be as you are, and you will always find other people you can be friends with, and even win over the ones that where nasty up front. And this always happens everywhere, I experienced it both as being an immigrant and as being one of the very few females in constructions. Can you imagine going to a job inspection when you are 24 and a female and telling some 65 year old male foreman than he needs to correct something?
Pizza and bagels I will not miss it, we rarely buy them as I make my own. But as long as I have my farmer markets, or areas where I can find produce that is not mass produced, have my piece of garden, and a family with whom I can spend time with it, while not feeling I am not doing enough. Then I am in heaven
Where are you from?
I was born at Camp Lejeune, NC (Jacksonville, about 2 hours southeast of Ral), my daddy was a career Marine.
When did you come here, and why?
Both of my parents are natives of Wake County, so we came "home" nearly every weekend when I was a kid. Raleigh seemed like such a cool cool cool place to me that my goal was to grow up and move to Raleigh. Which is what I did. :-)
What other places (besides the aforementioned) have you lived?
Already mentioned Jacksonville, attended college at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee (love the mountains), lived briefly in Texas (a dumb mistake involving a man), and in Atlanta. Otherwise, it's been RALEIGH!
What do you like about the area?
I have very deep roots in Wake, Granville, and Johnston counties. My family on both sides have been here since prior to the Revolution. So I belong! I'm a little geeky about genealogy, so it's cool to live in the land of my ancestors so I can prowl through their land, old cemeteries, and the NC Archives. Otherwise - love the seasons, trees, and proximity to beach and mountains.

Mid-50s female, divorced, one son who is a senior at Western Carolina. Bought a townhome in N Raleigh after my divorce and love living here. Work for a local software company, breast cancer survivor/thriver. I'm a writer at heart, if only I could find a way to make a living at it!
