I am so bummed that my youngest daughter did not get into Kestrel Heights Charter School. My oldest daughter is there, so I thought the sibling preferance would guranteed. NOT! Uggh! I have no idea what to do abut school for my 6 year old this upcoming school year!

I thought siblings had priority, but is it possible that they filled the entire kindergarten with siblings of current students? And that there were more siblings than current slots? Are you high on the wait list?

@voltige, I was actually trying to get my daughter into the first grade. Due to her age she attended private school for kindergarten. Sibling do get priority, but I was schocked to find out that 10 others parents applied for first grade. I'm on the waiting list.

I understand. I don't think there is much you can do in this case though. Did anybody get in through the lottery for 1st grade? If there are no available seats, they can't make one appear out of thin air. The situation stinks though. I have a son with a summer birthday and have been on the fence about pre-k, private k, and traditional k. You really hurt your lottery chances if you do no apply in the kindergarten year though. Hopefully your child will get pulled in from the wait list.

From the Kestrel Heights website:

http://www.kestrelheights.org/admin/...014numbers.pdf

1st grade is capped at 60 students. There are 59 current kindergarteners who are continuing for 1st. So that leaves one open slot, with 10 sibling applicants applying for that spot. 2nd grade is in a similar situation: 2 slots open once continuing students are taken into account; 12 sib applications for those 2 slots. (And plenty more non-sibs applying; we're 47th on the waitlist! Woo!) :-)

Under the law, a sibling policy is permitted, but it is not required. This particular school's policy should be outlined in their charter. This school has been around for a long time, so I think it's fair to say that whatever policy they use is solid.

As a charter school administrator, I recommend that you do not push back, especially in the case of a long standing policy. Pushy parents are rarely persuasive.

@Eeyore1, I have no intention of pushing back. I'm just mad at my own ignorance. I thought her admission was automatic, and if I had known then I would have pursed other options before it was too late. Our neighborhood school is terrible, and I was so looking forward to not having to pay for private school this year. @xylemphloem, what schools do your kids currently attend?
