Well I was definitely wrong on Cary.
And all this time I was saying it Caaahreeey (as in pahhk ya caah in haavaad yaaad)
I agree! We call it (and have always heard it called) Few-Quay Vah-reena.
Thats the way it has been pronounced as long as I can remember (and after talking with my mother, she said as long as SHE can remember....and thats a long, long time folks!) Sorry, mom!
Also, I guess I may be misunderstanding the "spelling" but Raleigh is pronounced Rah-lee (with an ah sound). Again, thanks mom!
Yeah I might've been slightly off mark with Fuquay...."Few-quay" is probably more popular, but I swear I have heard folks from down there call it "foo-quay" as well. Go figure.
Rawl-lee, Rah-lee, Rally...I've heard them all, at one point or another. It really depends on how "Southern" you are! Being an NC native, "Rawl-lee" was what I've heard all my life. But for those trying to sound more sophisticated, they will tend towards "Rah-lee".
As far as Cary....trust me...if you go around saying "Cah-ree" you will be labeled a yankee very fast! LOL Think "Kerry" as in the senator.
Same thing if you say "Dur-ram" instead of "Durr-rum". We'll know you're not from around here.

I can't agree with RR on Raleigh.....my mother is VERY Southern! I have never heard anyone say Rawl-lee except some of the transplants! And I never heard Sir Walter Raleigh pronounced Rawl-lee, either.
As far as Fuquay....never heard "foo-quay". I think someone said it might be a business school pronunciation!
My cousine has lived in Fuquay for over 15 years. AFter I garbled it a few too many times he saud to just remember it is FEW- Kway because so FEW people live there!
I don't know how true that will remain, however!
Also, in eastern Wake County you have Zebulon and Wendell. Don't pronounce them as they look, unless you want to be labeled an out-of-towner right off the bat! It's ZEB-u-lun (or as many locals call it, ZEB-lun) and win-DELL. Don't pronouce the town of Wendell like Oliver Wendell Holmes (WEN-dull), although the town was named after him.
After meeting lots of people from the quay, they all pronounce it:
few-quay veer reena
The business school at duke is foo-qua, which is not how the quay is pronouced!
Just my two cents..............

Yes, I agree... all the NC natives I've met (and we've lived here a long time), also pronounce it "Few-Kway".
