Just looked at some homes by KB Homes in Wake Forest off N. Main St. near the Youngsville line. Nice homes with finished basements - no walk-up attic, but still plenty of access to attic storage on top floor.
I grew up in Durham. It seems like a LOT of houses built in the 60s and 70s - even into the early 80s - had basements. By the early to mid 80s, they seem to have faded.
If you are looking for less than 2250 square feet of living space the likelyhood of that home having a basement is slim. An attic would be much more likely, but again at that size it would probably be a pull-down as opposed to a walk up.
Thank you for your responses, Everyone. Seems like basements are a no-go. Where do you guys store all of your "stuff" (ie, Holiday decorations, off-season yard furniture, tools, yard/gardening equipment, camping gear, biking gear, sport stuff, other hobby equipment) when it's not in use? Would we have to rent a storage locker?
We have a tall garage and have a large storage loft built into it for extra storage. When I lived in north Raleigh we had a large enough lot that we put in a shed in the backyard for the lawnmower and garden tools.

Just because a house does not have a basement doesn't mean there is no storage - as others have pointed out. (But yeah, don't put holiday candles in the attic...learned that lesson the hard way once! LOL!)
Also, just because basements aren't as common, doesn't make it a no-go...they do exist...just keep your eye open for listings that have them.
A shed would be common for yard stuff, but many folks find room in their garage for that. When I was growing up basements were very uncommon and everyone had a shed for their lawnmowers, etc. It's not like you put a lawnmower in the basement anyway?
We had an attic when I was growing up that my parents put their Christmas decorations in. Our bikes went in the shed. Garages weren't common then.
Most of the houses that I have lived in since have had either a garage, basement, attic or all three. I have all three right now, plus a storage room next to the basement, but with an outdoor entrance (unfinished, cinder block & cement), but the attic is just a crawl space so while we could stuff some boxes up there we just put them in the basement and garage right now. I don't like the storage room — too dank and we have plenty of room in the basement and garage.
Yes, outdoor furniture stays out year round. We've been enjoying our hammock on these nice days we get every week or so between the freezing rain.
Where do you put this stuff now? Seems like you would want the yard stuff near the yard (garage or shed), the bikes where you could get at them easily (garage) — weather is great for riding bikes all year round here, the camping gear could go in a garage or closet, the sports stuff in the garage or closet. Hobby stuff would depend on the hobby. Messy stuff like woodworking — garage. Something like scrapbooking, in a spare room. Holiday stuff, closet?
