Yes the 1982 Terminal A was designed for the possibility of conversion to a hangar. That's why is it is a big open box.
The 1986 Terminal C was mostly a poured concrete design.
I hate to see the pre-1982 parts come down. Remember where the Eastern Air Lines "Ionosphere Club" used to be? But that's progress. As for the gates on the south extension of T1, they were hastily constructed on top of what used to be the cargo facility. No bathrooms, very little convenience shopping, and poor HVAC. Demolition is the right move!
A hotel between the terminals would probably do OK. There are certainly some people on expense accounts who prefer not to rent cars - they could stay at the airport hotel and take a shuttle service provided by the hotel, or use the taxi service already based at the airport.
Any hotel should probably be on the T2 side of the airport, which would probably mean it would go in place of the existing (older) hourly parking deck.
