I never had allergies either until I moved to NC. Mine are worse in the Fall and sometimes the symptoms change from year to year, or stay the same for a few years and then change again. I've been having problems for at least the last six weeks and it's driving me crazy! I'm having to take OTC allergy meds every 24 hours to keep it at bay. It think when we have more rain during Fall it's not so bad for me... Bummer, huh?

I am the same and when moving from Ct. to NC never had an allergy in my life until here. That was 25+years ago. Many years back I don't know what was different but they just went away and I am fine now. I was a mess for years here, and lived on meds. I think your system changes about every 7 years and things effect you different ways.

Same thing with me after I moved from Miami. I have eye allergies in the spring and fall, but some years its earlier and some later. When I travel to NY, FL or CA it goes away and then it comes back... likely all the plants here.
Luckily there are great medications that take care of the symptoms. It is well worth it to enjoy all the great outdoors in NC!

Get thee to an allergist!
Doesn't surprise me to read that you all say your symptoms wax and wane, and even change entirely. Our bodies try to deal with stuff, and I would think your immune systems are trying to cope, best they can. Rather than continually take something OTC, you may find an allergist can treat the symptoms better, and easier, than your trying to do it yourself. (No, I am not married to one. Just a former fellow sufferer.) A relatively easy, but 'itchy' skin-prick test will help considerably. I would suspect the oaks and grasses around here. Believe it or not, pine pollen looks atrocious, but is not a bad allergen -- not when compared to oaks.

Oh yeah, its terrible. In fact, its bad right now...all spring & all fall. I never had any problems in CA for the first 37 yrs of my life. I have post nasal drip which gives me terrible sore throats, and my sinuses hurt all the time. I hate it. I haven't found any magic pill, spray or otherwise that seems to help...I probably need to go see an allergist as well.

I've always had asthma, but it's been much worse since moving from Chicago to NC. I don't know if that's just coincidence or something more...
Incidentally, since moving here I also had a son--and he has severe asthma as well. It will be interesting to see if he "grows out of it" or gets any better once we leave the area.
Notably, I DID get allergy tested at the Duke Allergy, Asthma and Airway center... and my test didn't turn up a thing. Weird.

Moving here gave me TERRIBLE allergies.
I am heart broken. I love it here in Chapel Hill. Researched every angle of risk. Decided to pull up stakes in California and buy a beautiful spread here. Only to find out I have horrible hives and allergies. I am feeling pretty sorry for myself. I NEVER had allergies before and now that I invested all my savings moving here I find I am sick as a dog. Horrible huge red welts all over my torso, sore throat, aches pains. The doctor gave me steroids but I can't take them forever. The hives have lasted 3 weeks now (started Dec. 11th). I may have to move back to CA. I guess the last laugh is going to be on this invading Yankee Anyone who has gotten over their allergies please, please, please let me know. Did your symptoms lessen even a little bit??? I have MS and can't risk staying here if these continual attacks of hives are going to trigger MS attacks (which have the potential to cripple me). Thanks.

yes....coming from pretty much anywhere in the country, you will experience more allergy problems in NC. The state and its major cities make it to the top of many lists where its good to be on top; but it also almost always ranks as the top WORST place in America for allergies.

I have always had allergies so coming here for me has not been a problem one way or the other.. HOWEVER my cat has developed allergies.. Yep.. she was coughing and sneezing and wheezing (sounded like an asthma to me) so I took her to the vet and she has developed respiratory allegies.. she was born in Vegas and I guess all the grass and weeds and pollen are too much for her here in NC
