Does anyone use a Roku stick to get extra channels...
Interested in what free channels it gets that an
over the air antenna does not.
Besides PBS , Roku has apps for ABC, NBC, Fox, and CW. Shows are usually delayed a day or two. CBS has an app but they charge for it. Lots of news and other free channels as well.
Yes, during the changeover from analog to digital several years ago, WTVD chose to remain on VHF instead of moving to UHF like every other station. The professional engineering community had different opinions about remaining on VHF, but some believed it would prove to be a mistake.
In next year's repack, WNCN will also move from UHF to VHF.
I am so confused ? So my friend bought a New Smart TV and I went over to help him set it up. So we did and he wanted to “ Cut the cord†to Direct tv, and he was excited. ( side note ) he has had service with Direct TV for about 11 years. When he first got it his bill was only $45 and today after he called and removed some channels his bill is $137... I could not believe it !!). So he has a smart tv with Netflix & Hulu and I hooked up the antenna He could get 28 channels but all he wanted was ABC, CBS , NBC & PBS so all of the channels were great except we could not get UNC, we tried to do many things and just can’t get it. Now here is the kicker !!! I have the very same TV at my house and I get UNC Channels the 36.1 36.2 36.3 and 4.1 4.2 & 4.3. All UNC TV I live North of Wake Forest and he lives in North Raleigh !!! We have tried getting another indoor/outdoor antenna So we are just at a loss we don’t have any idea what to do or who to even call.... we have tried everything

So he is getting internet only from Direct TV ?
It should be easy to compare other available internet options.
But I don't understand the "he called and removed some channels"
seems he is still getting some direct tv channels...
also, I used to live in N Raleigh and got UNC just fine.

Yeah same here, that part of the post confused me. That's what is really screwing over their billing. If you want to cut the cord, cut the cord and only subscribe to internet. If you try to keep any channels at all they're eventually going to ding you in the wallet.
I have ATT for their high speed Fiber internet only and pay no where near the $137 that Chris524's friend is paying. It sounds like his friend is still sucked into a packaged bundle of some sorts.

It doesn't really matter if you have the same TV. What would really matter is the location of said TV or a number of other things. If his TV is in a location that's heavily shielded from the over the air signals then there's not much he can do except for getting an antennae with a super long cord and trying to put the antennae elsewhere. There are websites where you can input a location and what stations you want which will spit out the direction to point an antennae. This also doesn't mean "it says North so I'll point the antennae at my fireplace because that's North of my TV" -- for best reception you need line of sight to the outside, ie: a window.
Get yourself a good quality antennae. I set my parents up with this one from ClearStream and they couldn't be happier. It's got really great reviews and is the top recommendation over at wirecutter. Currently it's just $32 on Amazon.
Alternatively have you tried re-scanning all the over the air channels on the TV? Maybe the TV has a faulty antennae itself, worst case scenario.
Last month I broke down and had a professional install an outdoor antenna on our roof as I was getting sick of chasing signals around inside my house with one of those Mohu Leaf style indoor antennas. It's been well worth it. Not only do I now have an unbeatable lineup of crystal-clear free channels coming to all of the TVs in my house, but the conversation I had with the installer was very interesting. I learned that PBS (WUNC) is by far the most difficult channel to get, and it comes from an almost completely opposite direction than the rest of the channels (almost everything else is in Garner). So unless you have a completely clear line of sight, a good location, and just a bit of luck, it's going to be very difficult for an indoor antenna to clearly get both the normal lineup of ABC, CBS, etc. and then also WUNC.
