We were at the park today and they were doing early voting and curb side voting. I have registered to vote here and know where to go. I just know nothing about the local politicians.
Are there any good websites that break it all down for a new person like me?

That was a good website. I think you have to be registered with a party (not as an Independent) to vote in a primary.

In NC, registered independents get to choose a party/ballot for the primaries.

Copied from: Who can vote in which elections?
Quote:
If you registered as an Unaffiliated voter and want to vote in the Primary, you can ask for the Democratic Party primary ballot, the Republican Party primary ballot, or neither. Your choice does not change your Unaffiliated status or obligate you to vote for a party’s candidates in the General Election. However, if there is a Primary Run-off, you can only participate in the Run-off of the same party that you selected in the original Primary.

I pull up my ballot on the Board of Elections site and search to find each candidate's website. Then I look to the various local news outlets to see if they have their own voter guide with information about the candidates. I read everything with a giant grain of salt.

I do pretty much the same - I take a completed sample ballot with me when I vote so I can just copy my decisions.

ETA: It looks like you can't since they make no mention of it. They only mention unaffiliated voters being allowed to vote in any of the 3 party primaries.
