Best Barbecue around Southpoint
Is there anything around Southpoint that's great? Brier Creek and Chapel Hill are too far for this exercise...I'm talking within a 2 mile circle from Southpoint mall that I could hit for a quick dinner when in a rush...preferably a place with takeout options.
Thanks!

The Q Shack on University might be a little beyond your 2 mile radius, but I like the joint. Its not your typical NC style BBQ, but its pretty good. There used to be one at Southpoint, but it was closed to make way for the Cheesecake Factory.

I live around there, and I literally can't think of a single BBQ place nearby, let alone one that I'd recommend. There's a BBQ joint north of there on Fayetteville (whose name I'm blanking on right now, but it's right around the intersection with Riddle Road), but it's not NC-style BBQ. It's a mustard-based sauce--is that TN style? I hear folks like it, but the only time I ever ate it was while pregnant and averse to just about everything... so now it's forever tainted for me. LOL. You're going to have to go further into town to get some decent Q.

Keep em coming - I will look into each of these but it appears my suspicion is true - nothing in the immediate area.

I'd second Lewis BBQ on 55. We eat lunch there a lot. It's just south of the 54/55 intersection and should only take a few minutes to reach.

Lewis BBQ now has a new name (something like BBQ Joint/Place). Haven't been there since the new name (new owners?), but did like the other place ok. Typical NC BBQ IMHO.
The only other place around is O'Briens' on Hwy. 55 off Hwy. 54. I like it alot for babyback ribs and their sauce is Really good! They also have a deal where two eat for 25.00 where you get BBQ chicken, and pork and beef ribs that's pretty good and they have a take out window.
If you don't know of Bullocks off Hillsborough Rd near I-85 in Durham, it's really worth a try. Also the place that was Rubs on Hwy. 54 in Morrisville is good.

Actually, NC has two major styles of BBQ: - Lexington (also called Western)
- Eastern
Eastern - this is what you'll find around the Triangle region, and farther East, for the most part. Sauce contains vineagar and often a strong salty or brine-ish taste.
Lexington - has some vineagar as well, but sourness from vineagar is counterbalanced by sugar, honey, and/or molasses, etc. Ketchup is usually an ingredient.
There are certainly other styles, but regionally-speaking, these are the two NC biggies.
Also, as you move Westward across NC, Hwy 1 generally marks the region where Eastern style takes over.
In the Triangle area, there is also a chain called Danny's BBQ, and I understand that they are Texas-style. I hear he came to the area and couldn't find any that he liked, so he started making it the way he was used to. Many really like it... it is very different from the Eastern you so often find around here.
And Mustard-based is not necessarily SC style. SC as a few different styles.
My Personal Soapbox
I'm a Western/Lexington fan myself. I think Eastern tastes like sea water. I can't even taste the pork most of the time. When I visit a restaurant, and tell them I don't like Eastern, they always say "we only put a little in it".... but it's always nasty. I think they've fried their taste buds with all that brine! :-)
I haven't yet found a Western bbq joint in the Triangle area yet -- though my hunting has only been half-hearted.
My qualifications? I'm the webmaster of the Hog Happnin, a NC BBQ competition. My Dad also competes, along with two of my Uncles -- one of which won the SC state championship a few years ago and qualified to compete in the nationals in Kansas City, MO.
