I'm in favor of mixed-use developments. However, I must admit that I have an aversion to condominiums. I know, I know, but I can't help it. Maybe it's just the word "condo". The very word makes my nose wrinkle. It reminds me too much of the '80s. Am I making sense or am I just crazy?
That being said, on three different occasions I have lived in areas where I did not have a car and walked everywhere and I
loved it. I walked to the grocery store, the post office, and often popped into local galleries and shops just to browse. These neighborhoods always had a great sense of community, too. The only downside was that the restaurants were so convenient that we rarely ate at home!
When I first moved to the Triangle, I lived in Southern Village in Chapel Hill. As you can imagine, I loved that I could walk to Weaver Street Market and the various other shops at the center of the development. However, it felt oddly fake to me ... mainly because it was completely disconnected from the rest of Chapel Hill. There's an insulated, Disney-esque feeling to the development that didn't sit right with me. However, I appreciate the convenience & the many different housing options: apartments, condos, townhomes, & single family homes.
