Hi everyone,

My wife and I are starting our house hunt, and we've been comparing neighborhoods. We have really liked Scott's Mill and have heard great things about it, but we've also heard about Holly Springs, but haven't found a whole lot of people talking about the good neighborhoods there.

What is the general reputation of Holly Glen in HS? We do plan on starting a family soon, is Apex or HS better? The most important thing we are looking for is the neighborhood.

Both are excellent from what I've observed and heard. Apex is going to be more expensive as a general rule of thumb, since it's closer to DT Raleigh and RTP for the most part. Scott's Mill is a really nice neighborhood and it shows as it's priced more inline with similar neighborhoods in Cary.

Scott's Mill is a very desirable neighborhood right now. With our low inventory, many of the nice homes have come on the market and have sold in 2 to 3 days! I had clients that waited four months to find a great home and it was snatched right out from under us. When the next home came on the market, we moved very quickly to purchase it on day 1!

Holly Glen is also a desirable neighborhood. 12 Oaks is too.

Both are great. I think you get a little more for your money in Holly Springs as it is just a little further out. Currently all of the elementary schools in HS are capped to newcomers, but that should get much better when the new elementary school opens in 2016.

When you say capped to new comers, we have been here since 2008 are we considered new comers? our son would start in 2016

Zinner I believe I read that if you already lived in Holly Springs your kids would be able to attend the local school when they were old enough to start, it was only for people moving into town with kids after the schools were capped. However if your son is starting in 2016 and the new elementary school opens on time it should help remove (or at least increase) the cap for new people in Holly Springs.

This is the article (relevant line "The policy exempts families who already live in the school zone but don’t yet have children attending the school.") -

thanx boardmember. Sounds complicated, but I was thinking, well kids are leaving for new schools every class that "graduates". I live within walking distances to Holly Ridge so I want my son to go there. I moved here before kids so all this stuff seemed ridiculous but now it's for real, where I grew up you just went to the school near your house, but now it's a big socialist experiment.

Thank you for your responses! We were looking in both Holly Glen and Scotts Mill, and we liked the houses we saw but we hadn't heard anything substantial about Holly Glen. We drove around the neighborhood and it looked fairly nice and the location seemed good, but we were hoping to hear from people that lived near/in it to see what they were thinking as well. The size increase from there is nice, but we also love the neighborhoods in Apex, they seem to be a great place for a family.

Hmmm, not really. It's not capped because of busing, it's capped because there are too many people to fit in one school.

If you have lived in your base zone since 2008, you are most likely going to go to your base school, even if it's capped. You can check with your school to see if there are any issues getting people in, even if they've lived in the neighborhood for a number of years, but usually there aren't.

Rising kindergarteners should be fine. I should have clarified. They don't *guarantee* that rising kindergarteners will get into a capped school, but based on anecdotes I've heard in my mom circles they have been fine (I know some who are starting at Holly Grove this year) You can always contact WCPSS to find out what the official policy is.
