It's not just this area. I saw quite a few mom & pop bakeries close in MA also. Most supermarkets have bakeries. There not as good. But people like one stop shopping. As much as I love sweets a lack of bakeries is not a bad thing with the obesity in this country. Of course all the fast food chains make up for not as many bake shops being around!

Well, in my answer I limited myself to stores that create bread AND pastries, as that is what the original poster asked. For good quality/quantity of both I think La Farm and Guglhupf are the choices. But if the question was bread OR pastries and if you don't mind chains, there are lots of options.

For bread we have a lot of Panera, a couple of franchises of Great Harvest Bread, and Whole Foods sells from several local bread makers (like 9th Street, which used to have a retail location but now I think they only wholesale). There also is Neomonde, which wholesales a lot of bread, but most folks think of it as a mediterrenean restaurant.

For pastries there are a lot of choices, including the already mentioned Hereghty, Once in a Blue Moon, Mad atter, etc. I also like Sweet Traditions in Cary.

I can't spend less than $20 in La farm. I was just there this afternoon to pickup their stolen bread. They know what they're doing with those samples because I also left with pumpkin bread and the berry tart. If the store hadn't been so busy I would have gone back through to get the cinnamon rolls.

Another cool bakery in Cary is Great Harvest.

If your out and about one to try is Manhattan Bread Company in Wake Forest. Its off South Main Street kinda hard to find as it sits behind the Remington Grill which faces South Main street. They have fresh baked bread, rolls, bagels, and many many pastries and cakes. Happy bakery hunting!

I just saw an ad in the N & O today for "Bakers Dozen" located in Celebration at Six Forks in N. Raleigh. From the looks of the ad they only have bread and pastries...no cakes.

There's a phenomenal little restaurant in downtown Durham called Rue Cler (on Chapel Hill Street). They have a great little bakery attached to it. Yummy fresh beignets are available. Pure heaven.
