Pastry , Bakery Shop
I'm trying to find a real Bakery in Raleigh. One that bakes it's own bread and creates it's own pastries. I don't know where they are hiding.

There was one at Creedmoor & Millbrook (Gourmandises de France), but I have heard that it is now gone. I don't know of another one in Raleigh. There is La Farm in Cary, which is excellent and worth the trip. They also sell at the state farmer's market in Raleigh. There is Guglhupf in Durham which is also excellent and worth a trip.

I second the recommendation for Guglhupf. Here is its web address, http://www.guglhupf.com/.

Heraghty's Heavenly Delicious in Glenwood Villages is a french bakery, but only does pastry and desserts, not bread. Althought their pastry is to die for.

Blue Moon in Cary is pretty good. Google them; they have a website. Good Bday cakes and tasty poundcakes as well.

It sounds like your area really lacks bakeries. What's that about?

Depends upon your perspective I guess. I can think of quite a few off the top of my head: Guglhuph, Weaver Street Market (their Wonderful Bread is the only white sandwich bread I will eat), Amelia's, La Farm (their website makes me drool!), Mad Hatter's, Once in a Blue Moon ... and I know there are more if you just do a simple search in the phone book.

La Farm Bakery in the Preston Area of Cary is fabulous - they have tons of samples that you can try before you buy as well. http://www.lafarmbakery.com/

I think for a lot of people, it is a question of convienence. I don't buy a lot of baked goods, since I bake a lot, but when I do, I don't particulary want to drive to a separate place for it. If I don't have time to bake for an occasion, I will just pick up something at Whole Foods, since their baked goods are locally baked (in RTP) and great and I am usually there anyway. I know some people do the same at Fresh Market, althuogh I think most of their stuff is baked from frozen (having seen them plonk frozen cookies from a big box on baking sheets while in the store) Or I will pick up bread from La Farm at the Farmer's Market. Luckily, Hereghty's is right near my house, so I stop there for morning pastries if I want them or great French desserts.
It is just not very often that I will buy pastry that I am willing to make a special trip for.
