No high-speed internet service in Smithfield!?
I'm moving to a small subdivision in Smithfield and I cannot get high-speed internet. I've called Embarq, AT&T, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon. Not one of them provides high-speed internet. Embarq may provide dial-up, but nothing beyond that. Has anyone come across this problem before? I'm sure it's available in other areas of Smithfield, but not in this particular area (off of Black Creek in Long Branch sub). I haven't had a chance to talk to the neighbors since I'm out of state, but could use any suggestions you might have. I just can't imagine they're all using dial-up in this day and age. It's a fairly new sub (maybe a year or 2 old). Thanks.

You have already called all of the largest HS Internet people in the area. If they don't have it they don't have it. You could always try clearwire. I believe it's satellite based www.clearwire.com Other than that I have no suggestion other than asking your neighbors.

Talking to one of your neighbors is the best bet, however if you will advise who your particular telephone company will be I will try to assist. I can't imagine any provider not having HS Internet in Smithfield as they make $$$ on that, not on dial-up.

I've heard of satellite service being used in a few other areas. From what I've been told, they have to run cables for the other services and providers like Embarq are behind on doing that.

Might try a mobile card, depending on your cell phone provider.

Hi Mikey-
I currently use Verizon for mobile service and Embarq will be my land line provider.

Thanks. Clearwire looks like it could be an option. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

When we first moved to the Archer Lodge section of Clayton (20 min from Smithfield) I was told there was no embarq here. Yet, some of our neighbors had it. Sometimes in newer areas being developed, the cable/internet folks don't know what they are doing. Plus they are wiring like crazy in new developments so something not available today, might be next week. THe same thing happened with my next door neighbors 1 1/2 years after we moved in. They were told by Embarq that they couldn't get it yet several of our other neighbors have it. A call back and speaking to someone else, did the trick.
If the house is a done deal, I'd wait and talk to neighbors or ask your realtor to drop by and ask a neighbor, since you are out of state (not something I'd normally ask if I was local).

Embarq gets up to 1.5mps while Clearwire does up to 2mps. The Verizon plan, which requires Verizon landline, is supposedly faster that the roadrunner super or turbo or whatever it is called, 8mps. If you get Embarq phone you should be able to get Embarq internet. Clearwire may be the best bet though since it's portable and you get the service anywhere (I mean anywhere if there is a signal since it's portable like a VOIP phone).

I just moved here from out of state and have Embarq 1.5mps. If you are moving from a well developed area you might find that very slow compared to what you are use to. I do.
