Right now, I live in MD, Close to D.C./VA, and am planning to move to Cary NC, but today, one of my friend told me that it's a DOWNGRADE if move from MD to NC, is this true?

Yes, it's true. Your cost of living will be downgraded to a much lower status in life. Others will mock it.

We moved here from Frederick, MD, worked in Rockville. If you are into the DC scene then yes it's a downgrade. We weren't into that kind of stuff and moved here in 2007. Would never think of moving back, hell I hate going back up there for anything

It's all a matter of perspective. I'm from NJ and love living in NC. On the other hand you couldn't pay me to live in the MD / Nova / DC Area.

Not every story is same, however most of my friends and colleagues who moved here to Raleigh area are very happy and not regretting the decision.

I am from NJ and like living in Cary. Away from busy NJ/NY life and quality of life improved as I am spending more time with my family. The pay cut I took when moved here did not resulted in downgrade. It is actually upgrade for me as I am currently paying 75% of NJ rent towards my mortgage+escrow.

For some, yes. For others, no. For example, with DC being a major metropolitan area, they generally get things before the Raleigh area does. So there may be some things you are used to that do not exist here or you wait longer for them. For example, FIOS came to the DC region over 5 years ago. Fiber Optic internet is not yet available here. Big name stores often go to the DC market before they hit the Raleigh market. (such as Apple, Microsoft (not here yet), IKEA (not here yet), etc. In general, upscale shopping is more readily available in DC. Four major sports leagues exist in DC area. There is one here. Dozens and dozens of world-class museums in DC, much fewer here. The city nightlife doesn't compare - it's a much bigger scene in DC. Major historical sites in DC - few are here. Plus in DC if you are ever bored, you can drive up to Balto. in an hour or go 3 hours to Philly.

Now, having said all that, many people don't care about any of the above (except maybe fiber optic internet). There is enough shopping here for most people unless you need Gucci and Versaci and Tysons Corner Mall. People seem to be happy with major league hockey, minor league baseball, and college sports. There may be enough museums here to keep you happy and nightlife might be just enough for you.

You do gain other things such as less traffic, slower pace of life, warmer weather, lower cost of living, etc. For many people living in a smaller city with fewer world-class city amenities if fine. Others miss the fast-pace, big city life. You need to figure out what's important to you at this stage in your life and if you think the tradeoffs will be worth it.

Yes, I've been to some. Notice that I said stores moved to the DC area before the Raleigh market. That's why I put the qualifier next to Microsoft and Ikea that they are still not here.
