Yeah. I just checked Google Maps. We are exactly 1.5 miles from WCMS. We have bus service.

I just read an article on WRAL's website stating the minimum distance for busing is three tenths of a mile for elementary schools so the routes/stops I noticed, including mine are more than that.

I just checked the routes again, they do have our stop for pick up on a different route from the other stop in the neighborhood, but there is no afternoon drop off for our stop (on any route)...

Mine is reversed. We have afternoon, but no morning. This is middle school.

Is that applicable to elementary school too? I know you're talking about MS in your case, but just wondering.

Regardless, if I were you, I'd be pretty upset too. I get that they need to have guidelines, but they also need to take the "walker's" route into consideration -- both when removing and keeping bus stops. For instance, there is a bus route in our neighborhood, for the elementary school, on which all the stops are within a mile of the school. One of them is 0.2 miles from the school! However, if you go on Google Maps, it seems longer, because Google Maps doesn't know about the greenway/bike trail that cuts out about a 1/2 mile that a car would need to drive.

In your dd's case, they need to consider that she'll be walking on a major road in the dark (on winter mornings).

They could solve most of their transportation problems by taking a bus from kids who shouldn't get it.

They would save a lot of money if they cut service to those under 1.5 miles to the school (WRAL was wrong, no difference for elementary) and that includes my neighborhood. I don't like when institutions have policies in place but don't enforce them, it does not speak well for them.

That's what they're doing (according to them). But they are not applying fairly.

Yeah... it seems sort of random.

I was hoping there'd be a link to the news article or the WCPSS press release.
