I have always done my Federal and NJ state tax returns for my wife and myself with no problems. I have a slightly different situation for tax year 2014. I got married in 2014 and my wife is currently living in our newly purchased home in Durham.

I live full time in NJ and have no income in NC only NJ. My wife lives full time in NC and has since April 2014. She has 3 months income from NJ and will have 6 months income from a part time job in NC.

I will not be itemizing the standard deduction works better for me. I am not all that familiar with the NC return and though I could probably stumble through it I am not sure how to include my NJ income on the NC state return but exclude it from the computation.

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive option or would one of the national tax mills suffice? I have a rather simple situation other than the part time state resident deal. I do not itemize really have no deductions to speak of.

I have used TurboTax or TaxCut to do Federal and NC tax returns for decades. Both work fine. There is a separate charge for the NC software, although you access it from within the same program. Some Credit Unions and financial institutions have discounts or even provide the software at no charge to their clients.
