I think a few opening mixed reviews ran a lot of folks off from trying Dashi...including a lot of City Data folks...too bad. I think only a few of us ever went. We enjoyed Dashi. Plan to get back one day soon.
It wasn't any reviews that made me not try it. It was the ridiculous prices. I'm not a cheapskate and I'm perfectly fine with paying for expensive meals and things. I just don't like to feel ripped off. And charging $15 for a bowl of ramen soup in Durham, NC is gonna make me feel ripped off.
I tried out Dashi at lunchtime on the 2nd day it opened, and I didn't find it to be as awful as all the Yelpers make it out to be.
The more I read on Yelp, the more I'm convinced that it's full of wannabe writers focused on wordy reviews and not necessarily accurate on the rating of the food itself. I read the google reviews instead.

I pay little to no attention to Yelp. I figure some of those idiots are internet trolls running around giving negative reviews. Some probably never ate there. Sorry...just my opinion
I was in Costco today, and Shin Ramen is there giving out samples and running specials. You can get 3x 4-packs (mix and match: Mild, Medium, Hot) for $12.99, I think. And you can sample their different varieties.
It made me think of this thread and all my CD-R buddies.
In my experience the ingredients in pho are pretty standard, you are just swapping out the type of meat used but everything else is the same. Ramen has quite a bit of diversity, there are different types of noodles, broth (soy, chicken, pork based), and ingredients and condiments for each type of ramen style. It can be a wonderful filling meal and nothing like what we all had to eat as broke college students
