My cousins and I are trying to get our dads (ages 88 and 90) together for lunch. One lives in Greenville and the other in Charlotte, and we thought that this area would be a good half-way meeting place. The thing is, both men are extremely hard of hearing, so I am trying to find a place with no background music and as quiet as possible. Does anyone know of a place that they might enjoy?
What kind of "cuisine" do you think they would want? Elderly people often want something plain and familiar.
I would recommend picking a nonbusy time of day wherever you go, like mid-afternoon, between the lunch and dinner rushes, for either a late lunch or early dinner. Then the ambient noise would be at a minimum, and they could pick seats in the quietest area of the restaurant.
The Weathervane at Southern Season in Chapel Hill is quite popular with a lot of retirees. They might enjoy that. A lot of their dishes are a newer take on classic Southern Cuisine. Can't remember if it's quiet or not, though. Maybe somewhere like the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill or like Herons at the Umstead? Here are some suggestions.
I have a friend that works at the museum of history in Raleigh and often lunches over at the Legislature. I'm not sure how loud or quiet it is, though, but they might get a kick out of it.
You might consider Nantucket Grill in chapel hill - it is right off of 40 (5925 Farrington Road Chapel hill).
We have met elderly relatives there for brunch and I don't recall any loud music or difficulty hearing them. and it is convenient to get to, and we were not rushed for brunch/lunch which was lovely.
But, since I do not recall any music doesn't mean that there wasn't any - we might have just been loud ourselves! So give them a call and ask.
Another option you might consider is the restaurant at the O'Henry Hotel in Greensboro. The main room might be loud because of the high ceiling but the side rooms seem quiet when I go there. The food is very good and so is the service.
The K&W cafeteria at Cameron Village would probably be quiet after the lunch rush or before the dinner rush. I believe they close for an hour between lunch and dinner.
had lunch at Nantucket Grill on Tuesday. I don't recall any music and I have hearing loss. But as far as food-nothing really special. Some nice soups and sandwiches but nothing to write home about except their evil decadent cakes which jump you the minute you walk in the door.
