Clyde Cooper's in Raleigh
Allen & Sons on Hwy 86, between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.
Barbecue Lodge (Mini-City/Capital Blvd. in Raleigh) is still on the A-List, but is a distant second to the first two in my list.
I bleed BBQ sauce.

cue
Stephenson's is some of the best cue in the entire state. They have been serving since the 1950's. Located in Willow Spring near McGee's Crossroads. Still in Wake County. I suggest to all that are interested in learning more about Tarheel Barbecue to buy the book Tar Heel Barbecue by Jim Early. It covers most all of the best joints in the state. Chains are not listed.

I'm partial to Danny's in Cary... .5 lbs of beef, dozen hushpuppies, and banana pudding... Makes me hungry just thinking about it.

As far as i'm concerned, there are no "good" BBQ eateries "in town" anywhere. Stephensons is pretty good for bought BBQ, but to truely get the good stuff, you have to go pig pickins'. I guess being in the know on this is one of the perks of being a native !

You can't get real barbecue in the triangle...Pete Jones(Skylight Inn) in Ayden NC is where you get the real stuff.
