At least if it snows we get to skip work. It's a North Carolina tradition.

I was walking around on snow wondering if I was crunching snakes underfoot.

This place is nuts when it snows.

I'm in W. Cary. We got 1 or 2" of snow tops. No ice. The roads weren't bad. How do I know this? I drove on them during the snow. I've never driven in snow (I spent my adult life in S. Florida where there is no snow, obviously) so figured it was a great time to learn since I'll be living up north here from now on.

Anyhow - around 4, we head over to the Texas Steakhouse near RDU only to find that they were closing up shop - due to the weather!

The hell? All the fast food joints were open around it, Cracker Barrel across the street was open and there was no good reason to close. No ice, no bad roads (if I can drive on them, they're good), nothing.

People flip out over a tiny accumulation. I figure if we got 6+" like they're saying we will get on Thursday the whole silly place will shut down totally.

Come on...

Yup. You alone have figured this out. The thousands of people who experienced slippery roads were suffering from mass delusion.

Good point. I live in Apex and the roads in my neighborhood are great, but some of the roads out there this morning we're worse than they were last night. Rt1. was an ice rink from Apex up to the beltline. Some major roads were actually in pretty bad shape this morning. No sand, no salt...

You have to also think just because you drove on some roads that were fine, not every road is fine. Employers are also worried about there employees. If they closed at 5, there are many people in the restaurant not leaving for 2 hours after that. Roads and some overpasses were quick to freeze last night as the sun went down, they don't want to risk there employees. I promise you some of the roads on Leesville and 540 (neighborhood roads) where not great last night, I have no problems with them but others do. This is only a few miles from RDU keep in mind. Also a lot of places close because nobody goes out in this weather and it isn't worth it to keep there business open.

And yes, 6"+ will shut the town down, it always does and always will.

Reading back from the beginning of this thread, most of you all were excited above getting some snow. Now there's nothing but complaining and whining. Get what you ask for, right?

I think most of us like the snow, just not the aftermath. If the plowing/planning was a little better, and we could resume normal life within 24-48 hours of the snowfall, perhaps we'd all be much happier when an epic blizzard is forecast.
