Has anyone tried evaporated or those boxes of dry milk? I remember when I was kid trying both. Neither reminded me of stuff that comes from a cow. Has it improved through the years as a good enough replacement for milk?
The media lives for this stuff. They are dispatching reporters to hardware and grocery stores as we speak.

The dried milk is still just awful, but I do buy a box of the shelf stable Parmalat milk each winter season so I know I have something in the pantry in case of emergency or meteorologist fumble. It doesn't last forever, but if you buy it in fall it'll last 'til late spring. And it's real, liquid milk.

Interesting. Can this be had at the local grocery store (Kroger's, Harris Teaters, etc.)? I'm sure it must be a LOT pricier, but nice to have as a backup too. If I can buy it locally, I'll pick one up tonight just to give it a try. Thx.

I think most grocery stores have it. It's usually with the dried milk in the baking aisle. I believe it was $2.15 for a quart, which is more but it's not like it's your main source of milk and if it's your only choice between driving in the ice and dry cocoa puffs, it's a nice to have stock item.

Naw, nothing to be nervous about. We're from earthquake land, so having an emergency pack on hand was always standard protocol. Looks like the boxed milk is goin' on our list of stock items. I'll just make sure to replenish it every six months with a fresh batch, and drink what's on hand. I always said that if I made it on Survivor and, after all those days, had a choice of beverage, it would first be a glass of milk.
