We also used Petsmart about 5 years ago with our big dog (rescue dog). Originally looking for the basics because she was already an adult dog, but wound up getting Canine Good Citizen certified because she responded so well.
I have a friend who used K9 and I don't think it's the positive reinforcement that OP is looking for - I think that's what she means rather than "positive experience". We used Superior Dog Training of NC - and they are definitely in the "positive reinforcement" camp.
I'll cast another vote for All Dogs Allowed. They made the whole training process fun for both owners and dogs. We all looked forward to going to class every week.
Karen didn't just train the dogs, she trained the owners, which is sooo much more important.
I highly recommend going to All Dogs Allowed in Cary. Karen not only teaches you how to work with your dog, but explains the whys of dog behavior and learning. She uses positive reinforcement and her classes are always kept small so you always get one on one attention! She's the best in Raleigh.
I think I'll go for All Dogs Allowed. They are convenient to me, on good times, and it's great to have all the referrals. Thank you so much for all your recommendations and comments!

GREAT! Thanks for being a good dog parent by getting some training. Makes a huge difference.
You might consider trying for the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate. All Dogs Allowed does that level of training as well as the testing. We did with our rescue, and having that Certificate proved very helpful when we have needed to rent, did home exchanges that involved the dog, and when we traveled in Mexico with the dog and needed hotel accommodations (Mexico is largely not pet friendly for hotels.)
