My wife and I, along with our 5 month old baby, might be relocating to the Raleigh area due to work. I was curious what areas of Raleigh would be best. My job will be located on Six Forks Road, 27609, but as long as my commute is less than an hour, I'll be good with that. We are ideally looking for 4 bedrooms, a decent sized yard, and sq ft does not matter (just want open floor plan with natural light) and a budget of $650K. Ideally, this would be in a good school system and within the hour commute distance to my office. Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
The great news is that you can find plenty of neighborhoods within 30 mins of where you're working. Look in the area north of where you're specifying your work to be - particularly between Creedmoor Rd and Capitol Blvd, and south of Rte 98.
Go to Zillow.com and search on zip code 27614 and specify your price range. It's not the only zip code that is north of where you work, but it's the one that probably has the largest selection of homes in this price range. You can expand out from there.
The world will be your oyster coming down here with that budget and your work location. If you want a vibrant community filled with relocators and offering abundant open floor plan options start with Bedford at Falls River and work outwards from there.

I think there is tons of opportunity for the OP within 20 minutes of the workplace. Probably even closer.
No chance with that budget and work location would I ever consider an hour commute. It is just too easy to not have to do it.

This area, like any other, has its ups and downs, but do yourself a favor, give yourself a 15-20 minute commute, because in the absence of a spouse that also commutes, there is no reason not to around here. If I had your budget, I would look inside the beltline, Five Points or Cameron Village area, so you are very close to restaurants, shops, etc, or otherwise further up Six Forks, where you can get an acre of property and a nice, newer house on said acre.
Darling, having come from Boston myself, I understand the "hour commute" question. Put that concern out of your mind right now. As long as you don't live south of downtown Raleigh or anywhere east or along Capitol Blvd you will have an easy commute. Chapel Hill would give you an hour commute.
Do you want a newer construction? Do you want a chunk of land? Do you want an older classic house? Do you want an HOA? What's your lifestyle? Those are the questions you need to answer for us.
As for schools, this is by county not town. Given school assignment problems in Wake County your kids will have a longer commute than you where ever you land.

I highly doubt the transportation issues you are mentioning above.
No reason for you to have a commute more than 20 minutes (and easily less if you want) unless you find a home you can't live without. There are a *ton* of great neighborhoods that are an easy commute, and $650K will buy you a very nice home in Raleigh that should meet all of your criteria.
