Hey everyone... I have been reading all the forums on this topic and they are definitely helpful but not 100% to what we are looking for. They seem to be school oriented which is great b/c we plan on having children in a few years. We are looking into relocating from long island to the Triangle area. I love Woodcreek in Holly springs.. any recommendations for complexes like that in good areas in Cary, Apex or Holly Springs? Any other advice is greatly welcomed and appreciated.
You'll get more, and better, answers if you can provide more information about what you're looking for, such as:
-How much you are willing to spend on housing? Are you looking only for an apartment?
-Where you are working?
-How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate?
-What type of neighborhood environment you are looking for: small town feeling? city excitement? suburbia delight?
-Community amenities important to you
I do not have a job lined up, although I don't expect it being hard to find one. My husband works on ships so we can live anywhere and it would be easy to transition from that.... We are looking to spend anywhere from 350-450k on a house. I don't mind a commute as long as its under an hour if possible. ( I am a CT and MRI tech - who also can do X-ray and nuclear medicine ). We are looking for that small town suburbia feeling. We love visiting cities but we like a more quiet relaxing environment for a home. We love the way Wood Creek looks in Holly springs.

Then the obvious question is why the Triangle? Wouldn't it be more convenient for the husband to be close to a port? Charleston, Norfolk or Savannah are all more obvious choices.
I agree the wife has good job skills, but she should assume it may take 6 months to find a job.
I am looking at the web site Woodcreek in Holly Spring. The models run for $350K to $580K. I understand they want to spend $350K-450K. It would be helpful to tell us what is specifically attractive about this development.
BTW, John Weiland, the builder, also works in the Charleston area. Charleston is a good place for medical jobs, and the husband would be close to a port. I am suggesting that Sailorwifey should tell us more about why they want to live in the Triangle. I hope they don't just repeat that all their friends tell them how great the Triangle is and how terrible Long Island is. We have heard that too many times.

That's quite a 'bump' in pay for CT/MRI techs! Maybe I should return to school!

If the husband is in the Merchant Marine, that pays extremely well. The mariners have to spend so many weeks at sea, and then they can go home for so many weeks. So, yes, it may be feasible to live in the Triangle and fly to the jobs.
GoldenAge1 He is a merchant marine and we do not need to live near a port... As long as he is close enough to an airport within an hour or so then its easy for him. He will not need to find new work. I will. I know it will take about 6 months to find a job thats how I got my job out in long island. We live in Patchogue now. I work in stony brook. I don't mind long island .. it is just too over crowded. The houses are way over priced. What we can get here vs there for the same money is mind blowing to me. I heard about the triangle from a few friends up here that either know people who moved there or are looking into it themselves. We were attracted to Woodcreek b/c since I will be alone a lot a community type place would feel more comforting to me especially in the beginning. Also the amenities at the place seem pretty sweet. A pool we can go to whenever without the responsibility of cleaning it. I know there are fees. But the taxes and fees alone don't even come close to the taxes alone in long island. The taxes on a small house for 420k here were like 11k a year. That to me is nuts. We want to move somewhere where the pace is a bit slower, the people are a bit nicer, cost of living is a little cheaper and quality of life with added of hopefully 2 kids in our future is better. I will check out charleston as well. I just heard about the triangle and I wanted to get some opinions on it and good places in it to live. We pretty much want to have a nice 4 bedroom house with a place for our dogs to run and eventually our kids to grow up. I just feel that as much as I do love new york since it is my home, that our quality of life would be better somewhere like the triangle. I know the saying the grass seems greener on the other side, but logically and financially i believe in this situation it is greener. Also once we have babies I would like to be able to take off a few years of work to stay home with the kids and up here in NYC that is NOT a possibility at all, even with my husbands merchant marine salary .
