I have yet to see a skunk in the triangle area but did see one up in Warrenton. May be just a matter of time until they trickle down here if they haven't already.

I lived in Irmo, SC and have not seen near as many Palmetto bugs here as I did there.

I'll tell you what. There are not a lot of snakes here. I've lived here a year now and I've been on the look out daily and nice only seen one carried into Walmart as a pet. And my kids saw one in a car park :-) north Raleigh- lots and lots of Deer in my yard daily.

Well....it depends on where you live.

Virtually all of my neighbors have seen copperheads in their yards. I haven't seen any, but odds are they are there if everyone around me has seen them. They're also dead all over the street. not hyperbole!

How you protect your kids playing in backyards from copperheads? or do kids not play outside there?

They do, but I don't have kids so I don't really know. People generally just make sure they clear out potential copperhead hiding spots, when is probably when they see all of the copperheads. We have a neighborhood playground that is unfortunately right next to a creek but doesn't have plants near the equipment - I haven't heard of any found in there. It's a heavily wooded area with creeks running through, so there you go.

You tell your kids not to go messin' with snakes. It's not like the snakes are going to run after you and chase and attack you. They're trying to stay out of your way. Kids are pretty noisy and snakes generally try to get away from big noisy things like kids. The cases I've known of people getting bitten were at night or dusk when the people didn't see the snake. One person stepped on it barefooted. One was working in the yard and thought it was a stick and grabbed it.
