Cary Police Hit the Streets in the Name of Safe Crossing
Drivers and peds should be on the lookout for special efforts at marked pedestrian crossings

CARY, NC – Longer days and warmer weather naturally draw more people outside, and the Town of Cary Police Department wants to make sure both drivers and pedestrians are safely traveling through crosswalks as they enjoy the outdoors. At the following locations July 1-8, expect to see a higher than usual police presence as officers will be on the lookout for drivers who don’t yield and pedestrians who aren’t paying attention:
• July 1, High Meadow Drive near Bissitt Street
• July 2, Chatham Street at Harrison Avenue and Walker Street
• July 3, McCrimmon Parkway at Lake Grove Boulevard
• July 8, Tryon Road at Cary Parkway

“We want to help everyone be safer by knowing and doing the right thing, so our approach will be to make these primarily educational events whereby during each observed violation, we’ll stop and educate drivers—and pedestrians— in these complaint areas.” said Lt. Steve Wilkins, Traffic Safety Team Commander. At each location, volunteers from the Town’s Citizen Assisting Police (CAP) Team will supplement regular pedestrian traffic while officers observe yield violations. For a full list of tips for operating within a crosswalk as a driver, pedestrian and bicyclist, visit at Watch For Me NC.

In addition to Watch for Me NC campaign events, the Town of Cary executes many initiatives to promote roadway safety, including RADAR (Reducing Aggressive Driving and Recklessness), Booze It & Lose It, Operation Slow Down/No Need 2 Speed, Click It or Ticket, and School’s In/Speed’s Out. To learn more about the Town of Cary’s Traffic Safety Team, visit the Police Department at Town of Cary or call (919) 469-4338. Unsafe driving in non-emergency conditions should be reported to our Road Watch Hotline at (919) 319-4521.

For real-time traffic updates, follow the Town of Twitter @TOC_Traffic.

========================

Real need: I wish a Cary PD LEO would wear a wire and pose as a panhandler at and intersection, and report all the drivers playing with phones & GPS, sorta like a night-time DUI checkpoint!

Hopefully this will be run a little better than some of these events in other areas, where the "pedestrian" is essentially standing around near the corner and not making a clear effort to show they are crossing the street or they bust people on the other side of an intersection where there is a median and Turing traffic stopped at a light makes it difficult or impossible to see over there.

I'm dying to see what happens at McCrimmon and Lake Grove as well.
