European grocery giant Lidl to bring regional HQ to North Carolina - Triangle Business Journal

I assume if they are building a distribution center, local stores will soon follow.

I wonder how many stores would be supported by the regional distribution center and what its territory would be. A regional distribution center will open in Spotsylvania, Virginia.

Regional distribution center from Aldi or Lidl normally suppport up to 80 stores. The Lidl stores will be about at least 50% larger than the Aldi stores, maybe even double the size.

If Lidl's new region will be 80 to 100 stores, would that be limited to eastern North Carolina, or would it include southeastern Virginia, central North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina? I am thinking Lidl may have an expansive territory with few stores in select markets.

Does Lidl have a Trader Joes version as Aldi does?

I guess yes, because 80 to 100 stores just for North Carolina would be way to much. Aldi has a distribution center between Charlotte and Greensboro and that also supports most parts of South Carolina. Lidl also builds a distribution center near Fredericksburg (VA). Virginia will probably be covered very well.

Yeah, they've been hiring construction managers for this area for a couple months.

I've been in a Lidl. It was in Bitburg directly across an alleyway from an Aldi. They are both box stores. They coexist in Germany.

My guess is that Wal-Mart will be the first to feel Lidl's entrance to the US market.
