Post Finding current property values in Johnston County

Pretty simple question - I know where the Johnston Co. tax office website is and how to pull up information on property there. The problem is the appraisal they give is dated 2002, and that seems to be common on the deed info I pulled up through the site. Surely they do appraisals more often than that.

I want to know how much one particular property is worth in 2008, or at least in the last year or so. Can that be found online somewhere?

Default Don't rely on...

tax information for the value of a home. Even if they did one yesterday, it might be pretty far off. They do not even go inside the homes for the county appraisals. You can try Zillow, but those are often off base, too, for the same and other reasons. Is this your property, one you are interested in buying or one you are just curious about? Are you trying for a home equity loan or just want to know for tax purposes? A good realtor who knows the area/neighborhood can help you refine a market analysis. An appraiser is needed to create an appraisal for a loan and they are only good for a short time, maybe 30 days. Appraisers do not look as much at trends as agents do. They pretty much only consider what the comparable sales for the previous six months were.

Thanks much. I personally don't own the property (I merely used to live there) but my wife does own it, jointly with her mother. My wife and I moved to Houston a year ago.

There's really no business to be done at this point, as it's being occupied by one of the owners...but one owner no longer lives there and if the other decides to no longer live there it would end up for sale. So presently it's more curiosity of what it could go for than anything else, but that could turn into something else in the future.

You did confirm my suspicion that the taxable value wasn't necessarily indicative of anything. Here in Texas most property is taxed about 15-20% on average less than its true market value, and I've gathered it works similarly in NC.
