I recently accepted a position here but I have a pretty quick start date. Looks like the new team wants me there the first week of August. I don't know very much about the city, but I have been directed to look at Cary, Brier Creek, Morrisville, and Wake Forest. Currently have a home here in SC and not sure if I want to jump into owning a home just yet. I would rather rent for 6-12 months and once I get a feel for the area move in. Any suggestions?
Then you'll probably want to be in western Wake, which eliminates Wake Forest and Brier Creek. Take a look at a map and see if you'd rather drive in from the west, say from Cary, Morrisville, or Apex or from the south, which would be Fuquay, Holly Springs, or Willow Springs.
Based on what I've seen the past five years, coming from the north through town to get to NC State would be more hassle than coming from the west or south. What you can do is look at the traffic cameras during what would be your commute times, and just poke around to get a feel for what is heavy and when.
I'm in west Wake myself, and if I were working on Western Blvd, I'd sneak in through Gorman St or Avent Ferry and avoid Western and Hillsborough entirely. By I'm more prone to scenic routes than any highway if time allows.
Good luck with your move and new job! And welcome to the Triangle!

Much appreciated. It's a great change of pace and looking forward to getting up there.

I would say around 1200 max. Best bang for buck is ideal. I It's just me and my lady and 1 dog.
Just by location alone, then, I would rule out Wake Forest. Not because it's a terribly long distance, but in order to get to that part of Raleigh, you would have to drive through a ton of suburbia each day and it would wear you out. The other three locales have much better freeway access.
Like the other poster said, though, you'll want to rent first. If you end up finding a place you like in or near Wake Forest and want to try out the commute for yourself, it may not be that bad an idea. Maybe you'll find it more doable.
The plus side of living nearer Wake Forest, though, is that rents are by and large cheaper than the other three places.
the dog can live in an apartment? what size dog is it?
She's about 45lbs. Medium sized dog.
