Just wondering if anyone here has an aircraft in Raleigh or the surrounding area. I'm sure you researched all the info...trying not to duplicate the effort .
Hanger vs. tie down? Monthly costs?
Thinking about either RDU or Knightdale, they would be the closest for me I think.
I have a friend that lives in N. Raleigh and he has his at Johnston County airport. Between Clayton and Smithfield. He really likes this location for his aircraft.
RDU is gonna cost you. I think Franklin Co. as posted above will most likely be your best bet. Not sure where you are located but Lake Ridge Aeropark might be an option if you are on the Durham side.
I keep my plane at KTTA "Raleigh Executive" (Sanford). It's right off route 1 about 15 minutes South of Rte 40. They charge $300/month for a hangar. I don't know what a tie down costs.
It's well run with self serve fuel if you don't want the truck and base customer rates if you do. The Wings of Carolina flying club is based there and they're good neighbors. No tower but you can call Raleigh Approach for clearance. I honestly can't remember if they have an ILS since I've just been using LPV approaches since I moved my plane there.
I'm on the NE side of Raleigh so Sanford is kinda far (+1 hour), although it looks good. $300/month for a hanger is cheaper than I was expecting. The Triangle North Exec field is interesting, might check that out, thanks pitroad. It's under 15 driving miles away, and you're right with that bypass almost open (finally!) I bet under 20 mins. Pretty convenient. Impressive services with an ILS, a couple GPSs and a VOR-A. Had no idea it was even there!
Knightdale is under 10 miles away, so I need to look into them as well, but it seems less well run. I can't even find a web site for the airport, just a Facebook page. Unfortunately it doesn't even have a non-precision from what I can find, which kinda boggles my mind. Unless the costs are dirt cheap that nixes that idea.
^Well, just land at Franklin Co. if IFR conditions exist.
