Howdy y'all, long time reader first time poster. I was hoping someone may have some advice on finding a private landlord in Durham. I've been in the triangle for about six months, and I'm blown away by how much it costs to live in a house with a yard. Looking around, I only find rentals through companies with pretty harsh reviews, and with the prices I see I'd really rather not get taken.

Any advice on finding a crummy house with nice owners would be appreciated!

I get your logic but IMO things go the exact opposite after you sign the lease. The company owned places are hard to get into at first, but as long as you are compliant they tend to leave you alone. On the other hand private landlords more often will work with extenuating circumstances to get you in. It's after your there that they can't be reached, neglect the property or go the other extreme by not respecting boundaries and.being personally intrusive. I've had so many seemingly nice landlords that created a hostile environment because they still felt that the property was their home, not just a house. I also believe many private landlords are in over their head and just need to get a stream of money coming in. They cant afford to correctly rent out or maintain the property and its the tenant that suffers.
