Hey there --
I'm looking for a coffee house with comfy armchairs, or reasonably sized tables, and a pleasant ambiance -- a coffeehouse where they want the customers to hang out, read the paper, work on their laptops... Mr. Toad's in Cary is pretty good, but it's small and usually hard to find a seat. I'm in Cary, but I'm looking for weekend hangouts, so suggestions anywhere in the Triangle are welcome -- it gives me a reason to explore CH, Durham, Raleigh! |

Well, I spend my Saturday afternoons at Cup A Joe on Hillsborough Street. I sit in the back and smoke cigars and work on my laptop. To me, its comfortable and the coffee is strong and the cookies are good, but the clientèle can be a little weird. They are interesting to look at, though.

If you want to drive to the coast, most any of the Port City Javas are rather neat -- my favorite, when I lived in Wilmington, was the one on the corner of Shipyard and Independence Boulevards. Fairly comfortable, nice couches, or tables and chairs, interesting artwork featuring different local talents, and great coffee and treats.
However, given the distance, I am interested in seeing what folks post here, too. I have a friend who frequents Cup O Joe on Hillsborough. She seems to like it quite a bit. Hmm. . . wonder if that makes her one of weird clientele Grawburg finds 'interesting to look at?' Oh, LOL. |

In Raleigh I'd go to Helios.
In Chapel Hill I'd definitely go to Caffe Driade. It is worth the trip, but more so when the weather is nice. |

I like Port City Java in downtown Raleigh. The place is quite spacious and the chairs are comfy. The employees are great. On a warm day, you can sit outside.

Isn't it wonderful that people are hanging out in coffee houses rather than bars?
