The real cause here is our lousy criminal justice system.

The loser involved was a repeat offender but was out on probation. This is not the way to handle career criminals. As you may recall, the 2 SOB's who killed the UNC student body president were given probation in Wake County for being felons in possession of weapons. This should be a capital offense.

I knew the pawnbroker from living in Mini-City. He was a nice guy.

It boils down to how much money we want to invest in keeping people locked up. From what i read he only had misdemeanor larcenies in the past. He had never been arrested for a violent crime. There is no feesable way to keep everybody who commits any kind of crime behind bars forever. I truly believe the problem isn't the criminal justice system as much as it is society dropping the ball on mental health.

It was the supreme court that dropped the ball on that one, unfortunately. O'Conner vs. Donaldson.

Looks like Brentwood took a hit publicly but in reality this thug lived in Wake Forest. Looks like he just drove right down US1 N and started his terror ..... 2 shooting, rape, stolen car(s) all within a few mile radius. I think the US1 corridor has suffered the most from the cleansing of the downtown area. People have to go somewhere and it seems the powers that be have decided to sacrifice that part of Raleigh.

Exactly. When downtown started to change its image the first step was to remove all the projects. In place of them, residents were given section 8 vouchers. There is a glut of cheaper housing there and it already had developed a stigma as being "little Mexico". Especially once the recession hit many of the migrant workers moved on and landlords were eager to accept any tenant they could and that is what we are left with now. I lived in that area for years and its the one place I'd never choose to move back. Capital before 440 from downtown is good but from there to TTC is very hit or miss.

Agree. I lived at Capital and New Hope for 8 years.

The area went down the sewer years ago.

I want to believe this is a freak occurrence, but everyone is saying that area is declining... I am looking into buying a house on Live Oak road (about a mile up New Hope from New Bern)... and it seemed like a quiet decent neighborhood when I visited, but now reading stuff like this is making me a little worried

Is it really that bad? I did look up precursory crime maps and stuff, but little like the actual people living there to get an idea. The neighbor I met was wonderful and she seemed to like it, but that's only one opinion.

And I'm glad he's caught!!! Pretty scary article that was linked
