Ok. My husband and I have been seriously trying to figure out if we will be moving to Wake County or the Charlotte area.
While the Wake County reassignments (of kids and schools) kind of sways me to Charlotte, the crime I keep reading about in Charlotte makes me nervous.
I don't even know if crime there is so bad....but it seems like its just talked about a lot, which makes me concerned. Even though it seems pretty there.
I haven't seen many (if any) crime posts on this forum, and I was wondering what it was like in Wake County.
Are there better cities in Wake County?
And of those cities, which subdivisions are nicest? Must be family oriented (we have a 1 and 4 year old).
Plus, my husband is a Physician's Assistant, and I am wondering if Wake County has more job opportunities over Charlotte. Of course we'll find a job before we actually move there.
Thanks for all your help.
Having lived in Charlotte and Raleigh both in recent years, I can tell you crime exists in both areas. I've never felt particularly unsafe in either city. Just use common sense and don't put yourself in questionable areas and/or situations.
I don't have kids. So, I can't speak in specifics, but school assignments is a hot topic in both Mecklenburg and Wake Counties.
Both areas are growing, especially in terms of medical offices.
I think it really depends on your personal preference. Charlotte and Raleigh have very different feels. I recommend visiting both cities.
It's true that Charlotte has a higher crime rate than Raleigh and all of the other towns in the Triangle. However, that doesn't mean that there are prostitutes and gang members on every corner of Charlotte. Just like in every city, there are some parts of town that are worse than others. The people over at the Charlotte forum can tell you more about that.
While you're checking crime rates & statistics, you should check the same information for the city where you currently live. You may find that you already live in (and probably feel safe in) an area that has higher crime than you know.

That's the thing, I've done that, and my city is safer than them, except Holly Springs (its safer than my city).
I live in Cary and feel very safe. I can't tell you how many times we have forgotten to close the garage doors at night or left a door unlocked. We have never had a problem.
Overall, I believe that Wake is a very safe area.
There may appear to be more crime because Charlotte is the largest city in NC. I work in Charlotte, but as always, use common sense and good judgement. Get crime stats for anyplace you are considering.

Charlotte might be the largest city in NC, but it's crime RATE is still much higher than Raleigh and Durham for that matter.
