I am soo glad that people are finally talking about the positive things that Hillside has to offer students. If you only listen to rumors, Jordan and Riverside are the only schools in DPS who have students who excel.
I am also a parent of a student in Hillside High School's IB Program. I encourage anyone seeking an excellent program for their child to speak with Mr. Foxman about all IB has to offer. The students at Hillside have been awarded numerous scholarships and awards for their achievements in academics, including the Bill Gates Millenium Award, which has a limited number of recipients each year.
Most comparisons for advance students are done on the AP classes but this is not a true comparison, as most Hillside students that are high achievers or honors students are enrolled in the IB program, which is a different curriculm than the AP programs at other high schools. Hillside is the only DPS school that offers an IB program and it is more demanding than AP programs.
Tammy, thank you for posting! I am glad to see another Hillside parent on the forum!
I'm not in Durham yet but I know the strength of the IB curriculum. My stepdaughter went through the IB curriculum and was accepted at all 3 schools to which she applied last year - Vanderbilt, Emory and UF. Her weighted GPA was 4.4 but her unweighted GPA was only a 3.4 so that tells you how schools look at that IB curriculum. Kids were fighting to get into UF and a few kids who had 4.0 without the IB curriculum simply didn't get in. It sucks but the IB kids work hard. Kids should leave the program already having seen the 1st year courses at college. The Calculus book they used at the school she chose was the same book she used in high school.
