maybe Pie Bird in downtown Raleigh.
I'd bet Guglehupf makes a good one, in Durham
K&W Cafeteria, to be sure.

I developed an allergy to pumpkin about 3 years ago, so I can't be of more help.

Last year I was in a big hurry and bought one at Costco. For $5.99 I thought it was very good.

Costco or (I have been hearing but haven't tried yet) PieBird. Although if you want to make yourself, butternut squash instead of pumpkin has a much better taste and silky texture - a more superior 'pumpkin pie'.

Let me just say that I am horrified you would suggest frozen over K&W.

Pumpkin pie is so easy and cheap to make. Why on EARTH would you need to buy one? Paying more for one is not necessarily going to make it taste better. I'm a purist, so I wouldn't want any fancy touches added by a bakery, like alcohol flavoring or nuts or something weird/fusion. I like mine ordinary, with whipped cream. I'm avoiding grains so I just make mine with no crust.

However, in a pinch, I would get one at Sam's club bakery. Their baked goods are always excellent. That triple chocolate fudge cake is my go-to for my birthday. (yes, I'm aware that throws me off the no-grains wagon, and I don't care)
