We originally considered Bucks and Chester County, PA. Not terribly cheaper than where we came from, but it was more what we wanted, we both had friends in the area, and only about 3 hours from Long Island.
We intended to move to Wilmington, NC. Then we visited. It took less than 48 hours to realize it wasn't a good fit. So we drove to Raleigh. Done deal. (Next stop would have been Charlotte.)
The other places we had considered prior to our visit to Wilmington were numerous, but at the end of the day were Mobile, AL and several areas in Arkansas. Colorado was on the list for awhile. We never actually visited any of them with a view to moving there.
We went on a whirlwind tour one summer. We were living in Dallas, and drove to 5 cities: Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Asheville. We hated the first 3, but liked the last 2. Unfortunately, we felt that I would have a hard time finding a job in Chattanooga or Asheville (I'm an embedded SW engineer, specializing in mobile phones and devices).
We then took 3 separate trips to Boulder (my top choice, but my wife hated the cold), Charlotte/Winston Salem, and then finally Raleigh. All 4 cities would have worked for my career, but we only liked Raleigh enough to move here.
But. . . . once we retire. . . I want to head back to western NC.
Southern California. I love the outdoors and consider 80's and sunny perfect weather. But in terms for bang for the buck for all of my needs, this place is tough to beat.
we considered Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx but soon realized that we wanted more of a Yankee, NE environment and fell in love with the Triangle. More Yankees and better COL ....
I considered Nashville, Memphis, Richmond and Charlotte before I settled in Raleigh. All were great upon visiting, but I really fell in love with the Triangle area. It has a very unique feel.
